[Guide] Feeding Your Papillon Empty
PostSubject: [Guide] Feeding Your Papillon   [Guide] Feeding Your Papillon EmptySun Aug 10, 2008 12:55 pm

This guide will instruct you on how to feed your Papillon, whether it's a puppy or an adult.

Choosing a Dog Food
For dry foods, a high-quality source of protein, such as chicken or lamb, is a key ingredient. If you have questions about the dog food, call the manufacturer, whose phone number should be included on the packaging. Follow the instructions of the label in order to determine how much to feed your dog.

Switching to Adult Formula
For Papillons, puppies should be ready to switch at 9 - 12 months. Another way to tell when to switch is when your puppy stops growing in height. Small breeds like Papillons mature much sooner than larger breeds.
Make the switch gradually. Here's a schedule for switching to adult dog food:
Day 1 - 75% puppy food, 25% adult food.
Day 2 - 50% puppy food, 50% adult food.
Day 3 - 25% puppy food, 75% adult food.
Day 4 - 100% adult food.

Feeding Tips
-Serve food at room temperature and remove the bowl within a half hour after he/she's finished.
-Always provide your Papillon with fresh, clean water.
-After 4 months of age you should be feeding your puppy twice a day on a schedule.
-Discard uneaten wet food after 30 minutes.
-For Papillons, use a dog food formulated for small breeds. This is important because smaller breeds have small stomachs and mouths, and can become full before they get the necssary nutrition. Because of this, Papillons need a dog food that packs a lot of nutrition into a smaller amount of food.

Your dog will exhibit these signs if he is getting the nutrition he needs.
-Shiny, healthy coat
-Good muscle tone
-Healthy, strong bones and teeth
-Bright, clear eyes
-Playful, healthy, and energetic attitude
-Small, firm stools
